Delmo Granary (R1 - 018)

Experience a historic site showcasing ancient power dynamics and the legacy of land ownership, set amidst scenic fields and historic architecture.
Not everything that was produced… stayed here. Working the land did not mean having a say over it or owning it. For centuries, these lands were in the hands of a few, very few. Those who worked them—peasants, day labourers or messengers—depended on them for their livelihood, but they did not decide their fate. A portion of the produce had to be handed over to the lord. Another portion, to the Church. It was the tithe: a tax that required a portion of the harvest (one-tenth) to be handed over. This granary did not just store grain. It also speaks of power relations. The fruits of labour arrived here… but not for those who had produced them. The landscape you see—fields, roads, buildings—is also the result of that system. And of what you produce… how much is left for you?
